There's been significant pushback against the proposed VAT hike in Nigeria. The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) have both rejected the proposed increase from 7.5% to 15%, citing the potential burden on already struggling Nigerians.

The TUC argues that the increase would exacerbate economic hardship, inflation, and unemployment. Instead, they recommend maintaining the current VAT rate or even reducing it to 5% to alleviate economic pressures.

In other news, South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), is planning to propose a VAT hike from 15% to 17% in the revised national budget. However, this move has been met with opposition from other parties, including the Democratic Alliance.
